Antibacterial Potentials Of Carica Papaya Leaf And Bark Extracts On Isolates Of Staphylococcus Aureus And Escherichia Coli

Abstract

This study analyzed the antibacterial potentials of pawpaw (Carica papaya) leaf and bark extracts on isolates of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli in Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic, Port Harcourt. The pure cultures were procured in lyophilized from microbial type culture. The importance of this study is to help evaluate and estimate the antibacterial potential of different pawpaw part on Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli and also to compare the antibacterial potential of the different pawpaw parts on Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The phytochemicals from leaf and bark extracts of Carica papaya were extracted using 70% ethanol (solvent). The leaf and bark samples of Carica papaya were air dried for one week and ground to powder form and 20g was added to ethanol and allowed to stand for 3 days before being filtered to obtain the filtrate. The nutrient agar was used to culture the bacterial isolates which were later subjected to Kirby Bauer sensitivity test for zone of inhibition using the plant extracts and standard sensitivity discs. The result shows that pawpaw leaf extract inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus to about 18mm and Escherichia coli to about 16mm. The extracts from pawpaw bark showed less potential by inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus aureus to about 3mm and Escherichia coli to about 8mm. The effect of pawpaw leaf extract on S. aureus18mm is same as those of Erythromycin (11mm) and Rifampicin showing that Chloramphenicol (8mm), Norfloxacin (10mm), Amoxil (14mm) and Ampiclox (14mm) have less inhibition strength compared to that of pawpaw leaf extract. As recommendation, government should make provision of necessary facilities to scientist that will aid in the effective research on pawpaw as an antibacterial for S. aureus and E. coli.
